Joiners' Marking Knife with Rosewood handle scales, manufactured by Crown Hand Tools, of Sheffield, UK. The knife is ground with a single bevel, in this case on the right hand side, to facilitate its being used against a straight edge with zero offset between the straight edge and the marked line. The cutting edge is skewed at an angle of approx. 45 degrees relative to the tool's axis.
Cut marks, created with the marking knife are especially useful when marking lines across the grain in positions where a saw cut will be made as the cutting of the fibres prevents the creation of a ragged edge when the saw in used against the mark - especially useful for marking tenons, dovetails and similar joints. The blade is 5/8 in. (16 mm) wide and approximately 2 inches (50 mm) long.
Left-handed users should look at the 112A marking knife which has the single bevel on the opposite (left hand) face of the knife.
