Made by Henry Taylor Tools of Sheffield, UK, these chisels are for the toughest jobs such as timber framing and heavy constrution work. The socketed blade design completely obviates the risk inherent in tanged-style blades of breaking in line with the tang end. The drilling of the hole into the handle for a tanged style fixing weakens the handle and creates a stress point, making breakage more likely. In the socket style of handle fixing, the harder the handle is driven, the more tightly it seats into the integral deep, thick-section, forged socket at the top of the blade. If the handle is destroyed by over-ethusiastic or long working, the handle is easily removed and replaced with no detriment to the integrity of the tool. These carbon steel blades, whilst relatively slim in section compared with machined designs, are of firmer chisel design (i.e. rectangular in cross-section). Most importantly, they are hand forged so that the grain structure of the steel is continuous throughout the blade, lending great strength and durability to the tool. Such a tool is used for chopping out deep mortises and squaring shoulders, sometimes even taking the place of a plane in inaccessible locations, rather in the style of a mini-slick.
The vital statistics of the tool are as follows (all dimensions are approximate and provided for general guidance only):-
Blade Width: 50mm (2 inch)
Blade Length: 200mm (8 in)
Handle Material: Ash, tapered to fit into socket, with steel hoop at top end
