Several features make the Veritas block planes stand head and shoulders above other versions. Firstly there are the A2 steel blades, which both
take a keener edge, are highly resistant to chipping and resist dulling. These blades are a full 3 mm (1/8") thick to eliminate blade chatter. (The
P2701 Apron Plane has a slightly thinner blade to help minimise pocketable weight - which is held at just 14.5 oz - 400 grammes. Users of this plane can also choose from
a traditional high carbon steel blade or an A2 version). The combined feed screw and lateral adjustment lever makes plane setting a dream and the blade locating screws on the Low Angle and Standard Block Planes
ensures that the blade skews to the desired angle without offsetting to the side of the plane .The bed angle is set
at 12 degrees in the P2201 Low Angle Block Plane, giving a cutting angle of 37 degrees when used with a 25º bevel angle blade - as is also the case with the Apron Plane.
The same blade, in conjunction with the 20º bed of the Standard Block Plane gives an effective cutting angle of 45º.
Of course a small plane needs to be easily held and comfortable in use: the smooth body and cap of these planes, combined with careful body design to give firm finger grip makes them a
delight to use, even in awkward locations or for extended periods. Having invested in a superb small plane, why not increase its versatility yet further by making it available as a miniature Low-Angle Smooth Plane? By
simply adding the P2203 Ball Tail and, optionally, the P2204 tall front knob, the P2201 Low Angle Block plane can become the ideal partner for attacking those smaller
smoothing jobs that seem too daunting to attack with a standard block plane yet too confined to be easily worked upon with a standard Bench Smooth Plane. A similar
"neat thought" is the P2210 Chamfer Guide which replaces the toe piece on the P2201 Low Angle Block Plane and allows perfect 45º chamfers, right up to 1/2" wide, to be taken from a 90º corner. |
