Accurate work demands careful measurement and woodturning is no exception.  This collection of calipers and other instruments will help you turn your ideas into reality.

ORobert Sorby model 9710 Vessel Caliperne aspect of turning that often preoccupies turners is the thickness of their bowl and vessel walls.  The answer to this question is simply answered by the use of double-ended calipers.  The model 974 Click for photo has a 4" (100mm) reach whilst the 977 Clcik for photo offers a reach  of 7" (175mm).  The model 977 also features an asymmetric design to allow measurements to be made inside vessels with a small opening.

Robert Sorby introduced a new design of Vessel Calipers for 2001/2002 which are especially useful when turning vessels which are narrow in relation to their depth.  Made in three sizes to cover every eventuality from the mini-size project with the 2.1/2" caliper (ref: 9725), Robert Sorby model 9710 Vessel Caliper in usethrough the handy 5" (ref: 9750) to a hefty 10" version (ref: 9710 - illustrated), these calipers can justify a place in the toolbox of every turner who ever contemplates a hollow vessel project.

Two series of calipers Click for photo are featured below, from Robert Sorby and from Silverline.  Sometimes it is necessary to transfer measurements from inside to outside of a piece or from a spigot to a socket.  The model 976, 6" (150mm) inside/outside calipers Click for photo are made just for this situation whilst their big brother the 978/5 at 8.1/2" (215mm) copes with the larger workpieces.  For marking out and especially for scribing the position of a chuck recess, the dividers - both spring and stiff-joint - are invaluable

NOTE:  If using outside calipers to gauge the diameter of rotating parts on the lathe it is essential that you round over the ends of the caliper arms, where they touch the wood, so that there is no chance of a dig-in.  The calipers, as supplied, are NOT suitable for use on rotating wooden parts and MUST be modified by you, the user, if it is your intention to use them in this way.

Planet Calipers: In addition to the caliper range described above, we also keep a range of economically-priced products under the Planet brand which offer decent functionality with affordability.  This range covers both inside and outside calipers as well as wall thickness calipers in various designs and a depth gauge. Sizing Tool: A quite different device is the 970 sizinPictureg tool which slips on to a parting or beading/bedan tool and greatly simplifies turning spigots to size.  Simply pre-set the gap between the parting tool tip and the rubbing cheek on the sizing tool and turn away until the tool drops over the spigot.  As many spigots as you wish - and all exactly the same size.  Easy to adjust, yet secure once locked into position using the two thumbscrews, the 970 Sizing Tool is one tool no spindle turner should be without.

Direct-Reading Caliper: This caliper from Veritas allows you to see the measured dimension at a glance and without the need to turn your head sideways to read the scale. The easily-read etched scale, is divided into 1/32" divisions (imperial/inch only) and measures up to 4" diameter.  The caliper is spring-tensioned to close onto the workpiece and is equipped with a brass thumbscrew to allow it to be locked in position for comparative readings.

Proportional Calipers:  Two sizes of these interesting items - an update on a very traditional tool - are available.  The smaller has an overall length of 245mm (approx. 9.5") and offers reproduction ratios of 1:1; 1.5:1; 2:1, 3:1 and 4:1.  The larger measures 500mm (20") overall and offers these same ratios plus 1.25:1; 1.75:1 and 2.5:1.  Both feature a stiff-joint system which can be tightened with a thumb-screw to increase joint friction.  The thumbscrews are of turned brass and the arms of anodised aluminium.  Well, if tools such as these were good enough for Leonardo da Vinci ... ... ...
